What is Shadow the Scientists (StS)?

StS immerses participants in a 100% authentic scientific research experience and the content is not curated in any way. StS sessions have been thrilling for the participating students and educators because of the opportunity for them to: connect with real life scientists and engineers, understand what they are passionate about, and hear about their academic and career paths; learn about the underlying science; and learn about the technical aspects of telescopes and instruments.

StS has a strong focus on BIPOC students and educators who serve BIPOC students. This program has welcomed elementary through graduate school students and educators take part in the StS program as well as indigenous groups in Hawaii (‘Ohana Kilo Hōkū), Minnesota (Native Skywatchers), Mexico, Africa (Zimbabwe, Zambia), and India.

Shadow the Scientists (StS) is a year-round series of Zoom sessions with Raja’s research team as they operate the Keck 10-meter telescope in Hawaii or the Lick Observatory Shane 3-meter telescope in California. It is a dip-your-toe-in-the-water experience of today’s astronomy research. Sample videos can be found here.

Upcoming StS dates, times, Zoom links, and technical details can be found here.
